Workshops at Apple Mountain Music – call
(505) 237-2048 to register:
Beginning Irish Whistle Class –
Dain Forsythe, Instructor. Dain Forsythe will teach this six
week course for absolute beginners. We'll cover basic instrument
knowledge, simple scales, very simple tunes, breathing techniques, and
an introduction to Irish Traditional Music in general. Most musicians in
Ireland begin their music on penny whistles regardless of what
instrument they later choose as their primary instrument. The whistle is
ideal for adult beginners. Most Irish tunes fit beautifully on the
whistle and the techniques that help define Irish music are easily
executed on the whistle. No prior musical experience is necessary. You
do not need to read music. Bring a friend and come join Dain for six
full weeks of musical discovery! Required materials: Tunable whistle in
the key of D Suggested materials: Feadóg Tin Whistle Tutor Book; The
Beginner's Irish Tin Whistle Audio Guide CD. All materials available at
Apple Mountain Music
Wednesday evening, September 15th through Oct 20, 2010 6:30 to 8pm
Fee: $80
Beginning Hammer Dulcimer Class -
George Miles, Instructor. The hammer dulcimer is a musical
instrument with a much longer history than many others but most people
today have never heard of it. If ever you do hear it, you're hooked and
would love to learn how to play it. Well, now's your chance. Starting
Saturday, September 18th, at Apple Mountain Music, there will be a
six-lesson schedule just for beginners! From 11:00 a.m. 'till noon
each Saturday, we will explore the dulcimer and gain an understanding of
how it works, how to tune it, how to hold the hammers, and, most
important, how to play a few tunes on it. No need to read music; you'll
be playing simple melodies and even transposing them to other keys by
the sixth week. George Miles is an experienced dulcimer player and
teacher who will help you make sense of all those strings so that you
can put their sounds together in a gorgeous waltz or a toe-tapping reel
or a delightful Irish jig or...... Apple Mountain Music has a few
instruments to rent and plenty of resources, like music books (if you do
read music) and CDs to help you get more out of the lessons. The cost
is $20 per person per lesson payable to the instructor at the
beginning of each session (pay-as-you-go; not a package price for all
six lessons). The class schedule is as follows (all Saturdays):
September 18th and 25th, October 9th, 16th, and 30th (no class on
October 23rd), and November 13th. For those who do read music, I
recommend, though it's not required, the book You Can Teach
Yourself Hammered Dulcimer by Madeline MacNeil. Copies will be
available for purchase.
Irish Penny Whistle workshop for the Absolute Beginner -
Dain Forsythe, Instructor.

whistle. Instructor Dain Forsythe will teach you how to play the
instrument and teach you a tune to take home in this two-hour hands on
workshop. Bring a whistle in the key of D, or buy one here at Apple
Mountain.
